Fairfield Councilman Dies; Evidence Seized In Case

 CBS 5 CrimeWatch

FAIRFIELD (CBS 5) ― Fairfield City Councilman Matt Garcia was taken off life support early Friday morning, days after he was gunned down in front a friend's home and shortly after declared brain dead.

Garcia was removed from life support sometime between midnight and 3 a.m., according to a nursing supervisor at John Muir Medical Center.  Some of Garcia's organ were to be donated.

Meanwhile, sources told CBS 5 on Thursday of significant developments in the police investigation Garcia's murder.

The 22-year-old Garcia was fatally shot outside of female friend's home in the 5000 block of Silverado Drive on Monday night.

On Thursday, sources said police had seized a computer and cell phone from that friend's home and were examining text messages from Monday night.

The sources told CBS 5 that detectives were also examing 911 tapes that included a call Jennifer Tarbell made to authorities about the shooting.

Police also interviewed Tarbell again Thursday about the events of Monday night, the sources said.

Investigators have found discrepancies in her accounts of what happened and her demeanor in the 911 call also peaked the interest of detectives, according to the sources.

Garcia had just stepped out of his car outside her home when a gunman got out of a car and fired several shots from a distance of about 50 yards.

Police said a single bullet from a small caliber handgun or rifle struck Garcia in the back of the head and left him brain dead.

Garcia's family said their final goodbyes Wednesday as his body was turned over to organ donor teams at John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek.

Police maintained despite Thursday's developments that Tarbell was neither a suspect or a person-of-interest in the case. They said she voluntarily came in for further questioning.

California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has offered a $50,000 reward for any information leading to the arrest and conviction of the councilman's killer.
