1 Killed, 2 Hurt In Shooting Near Daly City BART
DALY CITY (BCN) ―
Daly City police Friday are investigating whether a 21-year-old man was fatally shot in a case of mistaken identity Thursday night near the city's Bay Area Rapid Transit station, a police lieutenant said.
The shooting, which injured two other people, took place around 7:10 p.m. on John Daly Boulevard near the entrance to the BART station, according to police.
Lt. Jay Morena said police are searching for three suspects in connection with the shooting, and are investigating the possibility that the shooting took place because the victims were mistaken for members of a criminal street gang. A couple of the victims were wearing red hats, Morena said.
A 21-year-old man in a gold Buick was shot multiple times and pronounced dead on arrival at a local hospital, Daly City police said. Two of the other three people in the car suffered gunshot wounds that were not considered to be life-threatening, according to police.
Police released a rough description Friday morning of two suspects who allegedly fired into the vehicle, which had four men inside.
Both suspects are described as men in their mid-20s, one of whom is about 5 feet tall with a slight build and was wearing a gray sweatshirt, a dark wool cap with a short bill, and blue jeans.
The other suspect is described as having collar-length black curly hair and was wearing a baseball cap, police said.
Morena said Friday that police believe a third suspect was also involved, and drove a silver or gray newer model hatchback similar to a 2006 or 2007 Honda Civic, which the suspects used to flee on northbound Interstate Highway 280 from John Daly Boulevard.
Police are still investigating a motive for the shootings. "The victims do not appear to be involved in gangs or drugs," Morena said. He added that road rage does not appear to be a factor.
Morena also said that given the time and location of the shooting, there were likely hundreds of commuters in the area and police are urging witnesses to come forward.
Anyone with information regarding the case is asked to call Daly City police Detective Gregg Oglesby at (650) 991-8172 or Detective Frank Mangan at (650) 991-8147.
The shooting marked the first homicide in the city this year.
