Not Guilty Pleas In Bolinas Homeless Beating

 CBS 5 CrimeWatch
BOLINAS (AP) ― Three suspects in the beating and stabbing of a Bolinas transient pleaded not guilty in Marin County Superior Court Thursday morning to attempted murder. A preliminary hearing date was set for Aug. 13.

The fourth suspect, Lamont Elkins, delayed entering a plea Thursday and will be in court again Tuesday. He was arrested Wednesday in Marin City.

The beating victim, Ricky Green, 33, was released from Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital Wednesday afternoon, the Marin County Sheriff's Office said.

Elkins, 19, of Mill Valley, and Stefan Do, 16, of Bolinas, are charged with attempted murder and use of a weapon. Do is being prosecuted as an adult and is in juvenile hall.

Ryan Patrick Lorne, 22, of Bolinas, and Thoren Manetta, 19, of Mill Valley, are charged with attempted murder. Manetta, Lorne and Elkins are being held in the Marin County Jail.

Bail for Lorne and Do is $500,000 and for Manetta and Elkins it is $1 million.

Green was found stabbed and beaten at 94 Brighton Ave. near the beach in Bolinas at 11:12 p.m. June 23. A sheriff's office dive team recovered a knife from Bolinas Lagoon.

Green was listed in critical condition when he was taken to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital. He has returned home to his family Wednesday, sheriff's Sgt. Gary Wilbanks said.

The beating shocked Bolinas residents. Green was described as free-spirited and a flashy dresser.

Wilbanks said Tuesday investigators are still trying to determine a motive and whether the assault on Green is related to the assault of another man the night before on Wharf Road.

Manetta's attorney Robert Casper questioned the attempted murder charge Thursday afternoon. He said the charge should be assault.

"Given the fact he (Green) appears to have started the fight, this is now a classic case of the guy who won the fight being charged with a crime," Casper said. Manetta did not use a weapon and was also injured during the confrontation, he said.

Deputy District Attorney Tom Brown said he disagrees with Casper as to who started the fight. He said some of the suspects knew Green.

"He was not a complete stranger," Brown said. "We'll have to see how it shakes out."
