Drunk Driver Blamed For Fatal Bay Bridge Crash

OAKLAND (BCN) ― A 22-year-old Fairfield man was arrested for drunken driving after he allegedly sped in excess of 100 mph and caused a fatal collision on the Bay Bridge Sunday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.

About 2:20 a.m., a 2005 green Subaru Impreza WRX was traveling east on the bridge at speeds described by witnesses to be in excess of 100 mph as it approached a 1995 Mercedes-Benz E420, the CHP said.

The Subaru allegedly struck the back of the Mercedes and both vehicles spun out of control, each striking against the south bridge railing, according to the CHP.

The Mercedes came to rest in the No. 2 and 3 lanes. The left rear passenger, a 21-year-old man from Castro Valley, was trapped in the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.

There was no report of injuries to the other two occupants of the Mercedes, a 24-year-old Castro Valley woman who was driving and a 24-year-old male passenger from Oakland.

The Subaru became engulfed in flames after the collision, but the driver managed to escape without serious injury, according to the CHP. He was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving.

The collision temporarily reduced eastbound traffic to one lane. The roadway cleared at around 5 a.m., according to the CHP.
