Huckaby Is 'Person Of Interest' In SoCal Arsons

Eye On Blogs: Join The Discussion On The Huckaby-Cantu Case
TRACY (CBS 5 / AP) ― The woman charged with killing and raping an 8-year-old Tracy girl has been questioned in connection with two arson fires in Orange County, police said Thursday.

Melissa Huckaby, 28, was considered a "person of interest" in two fires set at a home where she rented a room in 2007, said La Palma police Capt. Jim Enright.

But Enright said a gag order issued earlier this week by a San Joaquin County judge handling the Sandra Cantu murder case prevented him from discussing Huckaby further.

He said any investigation would halt while the murder case proceeded.

Authorities said the two fires, which broke out eight days apart, caused nearly $90,000 in damages.

Huckaby remained jailed without bail Thursday, facing allegations that she kidnapped, raped and murdered her 5-year-old daughter's playmate.

The mother of the slain girl said her daughter never felt uncomfortable at Huckaby's home and that she was "very shocked" to learn Huckaby was a suspect.

Sandra Cantu's mother, Maria Chavez, told talk show host Dr. Phil McGraw in an interview that aired Wednesday that she had talked to Huckaby "casually" and also knew the woman's grandparents.

In her first remarks since her daughter's death, she said Huckaby's daughter, who was Sandra's playmate, never came to her house; Sandra would always go to Huckaby's place.

When asked to describe her daughter Sandra on the show, Chavez began to cry and said she couldn't.

Huckaby was scheduled to appear in court again on Friday.
