CA Vehicle License Fee Hike Gives Sticker Shock
ANTIOCH (CBS 5) ―
California's state vehicle license fee is part of your registration fee and it's going up from .65 percent to 1.15 percent starting May 19th.
John Rosploch, an Antioch resident is fuming over 0.5 percent increase.
"My impression was that it'll be on a previous registration fee, not on the value of the car," Rosploch said. "It was a big shock to find out it's almost a 60 percent increase over last year even though my vehicle has depreciated in value."
The total registration, including vehicle license fee, on his 1-year old Toyota jumped from $277 to $424.
AnĀ
online calculator from the Department of Motor Vehicles helps motorists figure out their new fees. It does take into account how much the car has depreciated in value, but the whole thing bothers Rosploch because he feels he's paying the price for legislators who couldn't balance the $42 billion state budget deficit.
"I planned my life around my retirement and I saved for it, and now they are eating out of my lifestyle and out of house and home," Rosploch said.
Josh Maher, a San Francisco motorist saw the license fee on his Toyota jump from $57 to $140.
"It's bad news for everybody," Maher said. "Fortunately I have a good job. But, it's really unfortunate for people with low income."
The money from the license fee will go to the general fund and public safety. The fee will run for two years but may extend through June, 2013.
