New Ways For Consumers To Put An End To Junk Mail
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS 5) ―
The U.S. Postal Service has said the average American gets six pieces of mail a day. Multiply that by every member of your household, and you could have a mountain of mail.
That's despite the fact that postal carriers are actually delivering less. The U.S. Postal Service said the total amount of mail is down 4% because of the bad economy. Mail volume is expected to decline further this year.
Still, any unsolicited or junk mail is too much, if you don't want it. So experts say: Ignore anything that looks like a contest form. The Postal Service said filling out just one can trigger a tsunami.
The Website
CatalogChoice.org lets you opt out of many catalogs. You fill in an on-line form, and they'll contact the catalog company directly. It'll take a few months, but many companies, like Crate & Barrel and Coldwater Creek, promise to comply with your request and eliminate mailings.
There is also a way to specify if you'd just like to receive fewer mailings from the company.
Several companies, like Macy's and Victoria's Secret, don't participate in the Catalog Choice program. But Catalog Choice will send your request along anyway, so the company will get the message.
The Bay Area Recycling Outreach Coalition has a
Stop Junk Mail Kit that you can access through the organization's website. It offers a 5 step plan
to reduce the amount of junk mail you receive.
