A power substation in San Rafael may soon carry all green energy. Marin County is talking about creating its own utility using only power from renewable resources, but on Tuesday PG&E suggested it might have to charge a fee if its customers make the switch.
We asked a PG&E representative why they would need to charge a fee for someone to drop their service.
"We don't feel that it would be appropriate for the customers who decide to stay with PG&E to be responsible for those costs that would be associated with customers leaving Pacific Gas and Electric Company," said Jana Morris of PG&E.
That makes some PG&E customers cry foul.
"I think PG&E's a big enough company that they could help us out a little bit," said one customer.
"I think PG&E should find a way to turn green," said another.
The utility says it is turning green, but not fast enough for Marin's liking. The county is considering creating an agency to buy solar, wind and other green power and only using PG&E to transmit the gas and electricity. PG&E opposes the whole idea. They claim Marin users would pay higher rates under the county plan.
"Our community is very excited about being a model for other counties in the country to demonstrate how we can get off the fossil fuel dependence," said Marin County Supervisor Susan Adams.
PG&E said it doesn't know how much a fee, if any, it would charge. Marin's green utility service is still in the planning stages.
