Illegal Alien Halloween Costume Pulled From Stores
(CBS)
Whether young or old; what to wear for Halloween can be a difficult choice. One outfit drawing sharp criticism this year is the illegal alien costume for adults. It features the head of an alien from outer space, holding a green card and wearing an orange prison jumpsuit with the words illegal alien stamped across the chest.
"To have something out like this at this point and time makes it very painful for a lot of people," said LULAC member Ray de los Sontos. "A large corporation such as Target should be sensitive to that."
Hispanic organizations across the country are asking retailers to pull the costume off their shelves and websites. Target did so over the weekend.
Amazon.com has a picture of the costume, but the item is currently unavailable.
"It's Halloween and people are having a good time," Dallas resident Megan Trombatore said. "It's kind of a joke. You dress up. But people can be offended by anything these days."
While some find the costume offensive, others say it's political correctness gone too far. Dallas resident Mitch Nickell said, "No, it wouldn't offend me. You kind of have to know the difference between someone from outer space and someone from this planet."
Target may have pulled the costume, but the retailer is
still offering a naughty nun outfit on its website.
The contradiction prompted one viewer to write to CBS station KTVT-TV in Dallas, "Sexy nun costumes, or dressing up as Jesus is okay, but an illegal alien isn't?"
