College Funding Dollars Going Unclaimed
(CBS 5)
Jamie Leong just graduated from high school and is excited to begin her journey at Duke University. It will be an expensive journey.
"There's a lot to think about...fortunately I have my parents who are really helpful with everything," said Jamie.
But even the most helpful parents; don't mind a little help themselves. So to do her part and contribute, Jamie baby-sits animals and applied for scholarships.
"I applied for the sports scholarship at National Semiconductor and it is $2,000 a year and I'm going to use that for books and a computer," explained Jamie.
"It's never too late to apply for scholarships," said Gen Tanabe author of A 1,001 Ways To Pay For College. "Believe it or not you could be the son or daughter of Donald Trump and still qualify."
Tanabe says several components are considered to determine who will be awarded scholarships and financial aid.
"While income is a big component to financial aid, Things like the age of your parents, the number of students who are in college at the same time, all of these things play a factor," Explained Tanabe.
In addition to checking with your high school advisors, you can find these hidden treasures online.
"There are a lot of good free websites that students can use and I do recommend that you use only free websites."
Sites like collegeanswer.com, offer a free scholarship search...super college.com and collegeboard.com are sites Tanabe also recommends.
But while searching the web, "Make sure they are free...Never pay to do an online scholarship search," warned Tanabe.
According to Jamie, it's worth the search!
"It's really easy and there are a lot out there for kinds of people and specialties," said Jamie.
