Businesses' Reactions To Failed Safe Harbor Tests
(CBS 5)
CBS 5 ConsumerWatch contacted all business that sold fish that did not pass the Safe Harbor test. Here are statements from those that responded to the results.
"Safeway adheres to the FDA standards. As your study found, our product is below the FDA action level." -- Teena Massingill / Safeway Inc.
"No comment at this time." -- Pat Posey - Bristol Farms / San Francisco
"Mercury concentration is one of our biggest concerns and issues. This issue will be discussed at not only the store level but corporate level to make sure that we can provide safe products to our consumers." - Sayoko Takeuchi/ Nijiya Market Manager
Nijiya Market told CBS 5 it is considering doing testing with Safe Harbor to make sure the fish they are provided (by suppliers) is safe.
"At Benihana, the health and well-being of our customers is our primary concern. Therefore, we require all of our seafood vendors to be in compliance with the standards of both the FDA and HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point which is recognized by ServSafe, a division of the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation). Additionally, all raw seafood must go through a parasite destruction process specified in the Federal Food Code 2001." - Jeannie Means / Benihana Inc.
"Ozumo restaurant already works with suppliers who have strict testing levels for mercury. We want to be part of the forefront of restaurants who aggressively move to make sure that our suppliers supply us with safe fish. We are contacting Safe Harbor to learn more about their testing." - Jeremy Umland / Ozumo
"A high quality seafood program begins with superior sourcing. We require documentation from our vendors for when our seafood was caught and/or processed, and with a strict H.A.A.C.P. program in place. Our two main vendors also employ a full-time U.S.D.C. inspector at their facilities. We steer our vendors to source seafood from areas that give us the best quality seafood, taking into account environmental issues. We are one of just a few companies to still process much of our own finfish, which allows for a final check of quality and freshness prior to purchase by our guests..." Bill Andronico / Andronico's Market
