Hundreds Overcharged In FasTrack Error

(CBS 5) A FasTrack glitch has left hundreds of Bay Area drivers with some unexpected toll charges.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports close to 600 drivers in the past year have been accidentally charged the $12.50 big-rig fee, instead of the regular $3 toll.

The Metropolitan Transportation Commission says that FasTrack has occasional breakdowns. Over time, road grime and streaks from rain can coat the laser beams that read FasTrack transponders.

"It was isolated incidents at different bridges at intermittent times," says John Goodwin of the M.T.C. "It was not a steady problem, and again, we believe the problem has been resolved."

Anyone who thinks they might have been overcharged should call FasTrack to dispute their bill. FasTrack does not have a self-auditing system, so it's up to the consumer to check the charges. You can file a request for review online, at 511.org.
