LAX Tops Nation In Stolen, Missing Luggage Items

Search Claims Of Stolen, Missing Items Reported To TSA

LOS ANGELES (CBS) ― When passengers pack their bags for a flight, they expect their belongings to be there at the destination. But an exclusive investigation by CBS station KCBS-TV found that this is not always the case.

LAX topped the list of airports for items being reported stolen or missing from luggage.
On Oct. 30, LAPD officers recovered 272 stolen items, plus more than $10,000 in cash during an undercover operation. It was the biggest passenger theft bust in LAX's history.

These two LAX employees would only talk with concealed identities.

"I saw thefts within the first few weeks of working there," one said.

Roman Jaime and Carlos Garcia were arrested on the tarmac at LAX, KCBS-TV reported. Undercover LAPD officers were led to the pair because many of the flights they worked on had reports of thefts from baggage.

Over the past seven and a half years, more passengers have claimed items were missing from their luggage at LAX than any other airport in the nation. The claims total more than 3,700 claims since 2001, equal to more than $300 million.

JFK International Airport came in second, with a thousand less claims. Newark placed third.
