Learn More About Richmond's Japanese Nurseries

Tom Oishi was born and raised in Richmond and spent much of his life growing cut flowers for the Oishi nursery founded by his parents in 1906. After being incarcerated with his family at Topaz War Relocation Center in Utah and serving in WW II he came back to Richmond and rebuilt his nursery.

Donna Graves has followed the lives of Japanese Americans as part of her work chronicling the history of California's Japantowns. She is currently project director of Preserving California's Japantowns, a statewide research project sponsored by the California Japanese American Community Leadership Council and funded by the California State Library. Graves has been involved with the founding and development of Rosie the Riveter/WW II Home Front National Historic Park in Richmond since 1998.
