Unemployed Californians Face Benefit Backlog
CAMPBELL (CBS 5) ―
Not only is it hard to find a job, but it's also difficult for California's unemployed to apply for benefits. The state is so overwhelmed; many are caught in a backlog.
The One Stop Career Center in Campbell has become the last resort for many trying to get their unemployment benefits. It is run by the State Unemployment Development Department or EDD, the same agency that processes unemployment claims.
Many people have tried to get their unemployment benefits by phone or online, but have not received a response. So they come to the center, hoping for better luck.
The EDD said the spike in jobless claims and the federal extension for unemployment benefits have caused an overload, not to mention calls tend to come in on Monday's. An EDD spokeswoman told CBS 5: "It's the perfect storm
We're working nights and Saturdays to process the applications."
If you need to file for unemployment benefits, keep in mind all of that is now done online or by phone. The least busy days to call are Wednesdays and Thursdays.
