Cars Damaged By Tainted Gas Sold In Central Valley

BAKERSFIELD (AP) ― Authorities say at least 450 drivers have reported having car trouble after buying tainted gasoline sold in Kern and Fresno counties in recent weeks.

Officials with the Kern County Department of Agriculture and Measurement Standards say gas produced by Kern Oil & Refining Company contained sediment that plugged vehicle fuel filters and damaged fuel pumps.

That gas was sold to at least 50 drivers at 25 stations in Kern County in late March and early April.

In the last week, more than 400 other drivers reported buying gas that was inadvertently mixed with diesel and delivered to at least 16 stations within 50 miles of Fresno.

Company representatives say the incidents are unrelated.
