Public Hearing Thurs. On Golden Gate Toll Increase

SAN FRANCISCO (BCN) ― The first of three public meetings on a proposed toll increase on the Golden Gate Bridge will take place Thursday in San Francisco, to be followed by meetings in March in Sonoma and Marin counties.

Public comment is encouraged at the meetings, where officials from the Golden Gate Bridge Highway and Transportation District will provide information and answer questions about the proposed $1 toll hike.

A vote by the bridge district board on the proposed increase—which would raise the cash toll from $5 to $6 for two-axle vehicles, and the FasTrak toll from $4 to $5 -- would not take place until after a formal public hearing, scheduled for June 11 in San Rafael.

Bridge district officials say the increase would make up for the district's projected five-year, $91 million shortfall.

The first meeting takes place Thursday from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the Golden Gate Room, Landmark Building A, at the Fort Mason Conference Center in San Francisco.

The second and third meetings take place March 13 at the Petaluma Community Center, 320 N. McDowell Blvd., and March 19 at the Pickleweed Park Community Center, 50 Canal St., in San Rafael.

Both meetings take place from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

A location for the June 11 formal public hearing in San Rafael has not yet been determined.
