Hundreds waited on line outside some Verizon Wireless stores on Friday to get their hands on the new BlackBerry Storm -- the first in the BlackBerry family to have a touch screen.
More than 200 customers waited outside one Manhattan Verizon store to buy Research In Motion's new phone, which is being marketed to compete against Apple's iPhone. But some customers walked away empty handed, reports Reuters.
Verizon said hundreds of others were in lines outside its stores up and down the U.S. east coast, but added that it had "plenty of phones" and would keep getting more shipments. It declined to give specifics on inventory levels, Reuters reports.
The phone was launched on November 14 by Vodafone Group Plc, part owner of Verizon Wireless. The company told Reuters it was struggling to meet the high demand for the Storm. Verizon Wireless is a venture of Verizon Communications Inc and Vodafone. Vodafone, which is giving away the phone to UK customers who sign a contract, had said it had thousands of pre-orders, according to Reuters.
