Body Found In Berkeley May Be Missing Boy

 CBS 5 CrimeWatch

BERKELEY (CBS 5 / KCBS / AP / BCN) ― Kayakers just south of the Berkeley Marina spotted a child's body Sunday morning that could be that of 17-month-old Jashon Williams, who was reported missing after his mother was found dead early Friday morning.

Berkeley police Lt. Andrew Greenwood said the body was found by two kayakers shortly before 11 a.m. in the waters of San Francisco Bay.

"It looked like a baby," one of the kayakers said. "But it looked like it had been in the water for a long, long time."

Firefighters recovered the child's body from the water Sunday afternoon.

The marina is near Berkeley's Aquatic Park, where divers had been searching for the boy after the body of his mother, 23-year-old Zoelina Williams, was found in the area early Friday.

Police said she was beaten and shot to death.

A patrol officer in Berkeley found the body of Williams about 4 a.m. Friday on the shoreline of the park during a routine security check.

Around 1 p.m. Friday, Berkeley police arrested 38-year-old Curtis Martin, III of Oakland in connection with Williams' death. Police said Martin may have been driving mother and child from Oakland to Vallejo.

Police said they searched Martin's home, as well as the home where Zoelina and Jashon Williams were living in Oakland.

Martin was also queried on Jashon's whereabouts, but "he is not cooperating with any part of the investigation," Oakland police spokesman Jeff Thomason said.

Lt. Greenwood said late Sunday that the child's body discovered at the marina remained unidentified.

"The body is that of a small child (but) has not been identified," he said. "We don't know who it is."

But, Zoelina Williams' brother, Karim Toney, suspected the worst.

"They're not saying anything," he said. "They can't give us any information, but we put two and two together and it must be my nephew."

The Alameda County coroner's bureau took custody of the child's body. An autopsy is expected on Monday.

Authorities spent 10 to 12 hours on Saturday searching the waters near the park for Jashon's body, but did not find anything at the time.

While Oakland police are the lead investigators in Jashon's disappearance, Berkeley police are the lead agency in investigating the death of his mother.
