Passengers have been evacuated by inflatable chutes from an American Airlines jetliner after an emergency landing at Los Angeles International Airport.
American Airlines Flight 31 was headed to Honolulu, but was diverted to LAX after about an hour in flight because of an odor and possible haze in the cabin, said American Airlines spokesperson Tim Wagner. It is not yet clear why the captain ordered a chute evacuation.
Firefighters were on hand to help passengers as they slid down two emergency chutes aboard the plane. The airport reports smoke was detected in the cabin before the landing.
There were 188 passengers on board.
