Simon Perez

Simon Perez joined CBS 5 as a reporter in January 2002 and reports from across the Bay Area on Eyewitness News at 5 and 6pm.

The son of a Colombian father and an English mother, Simon began thinking about a career in journalism while studying at Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia. The terrible grades in math and science helped him figure out pre-med was the wrong track.

After earning a degree in journalism, Simon's first job was at the Danville (Va.) Register & Bee newspaper, as the health, education and social services reporter. A couple years later, he decided to make a big move -- literally -- and crossed the Atlantic Ocean, headed for Spain.

During his nearly three-year stay in Spain, Simon earned a master's degree in journalism from the Universidad Complutense in Madrid, worked in the science department at the national ABC newspaper and wrote feature stories for the Macworld/Espana computer magazine.

In 1993, Simon began his television career at the NBC NewsChannel in Charlotte, North Carolina as a writer and producer for Canal de Noticias, a 24-hour newscast in Spanish, broadcast to Central and South America and Spain.

Then it was on to WGXA, the Fox station in Macon, Georgia, where he worked as weekend anchor, reporter and producer; and finally to WRIC, the ABC station in Richmond, Virginia, where he worked as general assignment reporter.

Simon is fluent in both spoken and written Spanish. He and his wife live in San Francisco.
